Implement undervolting for NC laptops

Open Atrate opened this issue 2 months ago • 1 comments

The problem you're addressing (if any)

NovaCustom laptops (V54,V56) can run quite hot under load, especially with "heavier" OSes like QubesOS.

Describe the solution you'd like

It would be nice if a modest undervolting offset could be set in Dasharo settings. Could help reduce temps by a couple degrees.

Where is the value to a user, and who might that user be?

Anyone who runs into thermal throttling issues on NC laptops.

Describe alternatives you've considered

I've done some research and asked around, and from what I've gathered this should be possible to implement without increasing attack surface.

Apparently undervolting was deprecated due to vulnerabilities like Plundervolt that targeted Intel SGX. SGX is no longer part of current Intel-Core-CPUs though. Also, from what I've been told Undervolting attacks seem to be reliant on the ability to change them at runtime. Setting a fixed voltage offset in the firmware should therefore not be an issue.
