Brief summary

When switching from NVIDIA Optimus to iGPU only and back to NVIDIA Optimus, the NVIDIA acceleration is not active anymore. The indication for this is that the dGPU temperature can no longer be checked in the NVIDIA X Server Settings application.

How reproducible

2/2 so far

How to reproduce

  1. Make sure you have the NVIDIA Optimus option selected and that you can see the dGPU temperature in the NVIDIA X Server Settings application.
  2. Switch from NVIDIA Optimus to iGPU only --> Save changes and reset.
  3. Boot to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.
  4. Restart the laptop.
  5. Switch to iGPU only mode --> Save changes and reset.
  6. Check if you can see the dGPU temperature in the NVIDIA X Server Settings application: it should and is not, because the NVIDIA should not be active.
  7. Restart the laptop.
  8. Switch from iGPU only to NVIDIA Optimus --> Save changes and reset.
  9. Check if you can see the dGPU temperature in the NVIDIA X Server Settings application again.

and back to NVIDIA Optimus, the NVIDIA acceleration is not active anymore. The indication for this is that the dGPU temperature can no longer be checked in the NVIDIA X Server Settings application.

Expected behavior

The dGPU temperature can be seen in the NVIDIA X Server Settings. It should be, because the NVIDIA should be active again.

Actual behavior

The dGPU temperature still cannot be seen in the NVIDIA X Server Settings. NVIDIA doesn't seem to be active, even though NVIDIA Optimus was selected in the UEFI firmware settings.

Screenshots

Empty NVIDIA X Server Settings screen, where expected is to be able to see the temperature of the dGPU:

Sometimes, I cannot use the Hybrid Graphics Mode switch, as I randomly get an error in the UEFI firmware settings that the settings cannot be saved.

This is related to https://github.com/Dasharo/dasharo-issues/issues/1664 . It seems that if SMM_BWP is enabled, writes to SMMSTORE in edk2 are unreliable.
