Virtual controller no rumble in steam games

When I use my pro controller in virtual mode (plus and minus pressed to pair), I cannot get rumble to work in games on Steam. Following instructions provided in https://github.com/DanielOgorchock/joycond/issues/69 (point 1.) I can make Steam recognize the controller as a pro controller, but still no rumble. Am I doing something wrong?
