Your patch work well with my files 😀 I think your method is OK because the gexiv2 implementation shouldn't change (and the change in 0.12.2 is probably a bug).

You can find if an image is a panoramic one using XMP tags. See the specs at https://developers.google.com/streetview/spherical-metadata or https://exiv2.org/tags-xmp-GPano.html.
