Super Monkey Ball Jr launched using Slot-2 mode leads to Guru Meditation

Expected behavior
Game should load to title screen.
Actual behavior
The Loading screen seems fine, but once the bar is full and the screen clears, then bottom screen goes red (see below). The title screen is never reached.
Steps to reproduce
- Open TWiLight Menu from flashcart.
- Ensure SuperCard SD is inserted.
- Open Super Monkey Ball Jr gba file
Notes
- Game loads to white screen when launched directly from SuperCard SD unless using this patch. Unfortunately this patch makes no difference here.
- Note I am NOT talking about using GBArunner2 (it runs there but with severe screen tearing).
- Also tried with Nintendo 3DS theme with same result.
Is this the only GBA game where the Guru error occurs, or does it occur with other games? Because I'm unable to reproduce the issue with the games I have. I've also tested with just the SuperCard SD, and no Slot-1 flashcard.
I've tested all the games I have and the results are below. These should all be european region and trimmed using ndstokyotrim if that helps. All of the non-working games at least booted through GBArunner2 though, unless indicated otherwise).
