a714386a70060bc9a98aac35a43d85916117bbbf does not fix #2279 indeed, and introduces the issue described in #2600. This PR will backport some fix to the 8.2 branch.

Since 9.0 has been released and this has been fixed in the previous 8.3 release, I decided to close this PR.
