MetaData Wiz 2.0.6 crashes using "open Science Base Item"

Open alfUSGS opened this issue 4 years ago • 1 comments

The MetaDataWizard 2.0.6 crashes when I try to use the "open Science Base Item" function to edit an online XML file I started. I have verified that I am (1) on pulse, and (2) using a correct active directory password. What I am not sure about is the "hash" -- I thought it would be the string of characters at the end of the landing page URL (its the same lenght)...is that incorrect? if so, where does one find the appropriate "hash" Note that it also crashes (closes automatically) the metadata wizard to just try to "check" the hash also...

@alfUSGS - I may propose that @ennsk deprecate this feature as an advanced function that may create more confusion than efficiency. This feature was added at the time to allow a USGS data manager to connect to specific ScienceBase item with an FGDC XML record attached, and then allow the user to open that XML from the item directly and edit it.

However, as noted, the feature requires some advanced knowledge of ScienceBase to be used properly. Using this workflow requires than an author have adequate permissions on an item and is aware of the distinction with populating the editor from XML content read online, and what happens with the save. Requiring users to just work with local files may eliminate confusion.

I did a test and the feature does work. I can provide the item ID ('hash') to an item in ScienceBase that I have access to, that has an FGDC record attached. After providing PW, the tool opens with the content of the XML file in the editor.

As an example, for this item URL - https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/593af2e0e4b0764e6c602207, this is the ID/hash: 593af2e0e4b0764e6c602207
