AU validation crashes (Logic 10.7.2, 10.7.3, 10.7.4, MacOS Monterey 12.2.1, 12.3, 12.3.1)

Tried latest nightly (Cardinal-macOS-e6e3fb7a.pkg), AU validation fails in Logic 10.7.2/Monterey 12.2.1

Interesting, I see some small issues with it, not sure if related to the crash but will fix them right away. Keep an eye out for new builds, try it when next one completes and report back again. Thanks!

Still crashes when using this new build. Now also upgraded to Monterey 12.3.

Reran auvaltool from the command line, and it shows floating point exception: 8 right before it crashes. Attached (I'm only attaching the report for the synth plugin, but the FX version fails the same way). Any chance of a divide by zero error?

To clarify: at this point I’ve been able to run the AU plugins in GarageBand without trouble. I’ve also loaded them into Logic, allowed AU validation to run/crash, then check the “use” checkbox in the Plugin Manager anyway, allowing the plugins to load in the “incompatible” category. This is probably not advisable for the long term but they seem to work ok so far. Someone would presumably need to debug the auvaltool run in Xcode to see why they’re crashing it.

Did some tests here, besides a warning that was triggered due to missing bypass implementation, rest was fine. I added some barebones bypass now, only for midi, will do the audio part later.

The validation passes here.

I'm trying to get Cardinal built locally for debugging but hitting an error from ld at this point, will look up the error message:

never seen that specific error, seems things were not compiled properly.

in any case for the auval report, I am not interested on updating macOS at this point since the update breaks a few things and so far everything works fine here, so no real reason to update.

unless there is a crash in Logic or other AU hosts, I dont see this with any priority. the plugin is runtime tested on linux on each build, for both memory leaks and corruption, so I am confident it works well.

if you are able to build cardinal (with DEBUG=true) and find a way to get a backtrace of the crash, I will take a look.

Makes sense to me. As I said the “use” checkbox in the plugin manager works for now. If I find the AU is causing trouble in Logic (so far it's not) or if I get the time to figure out my build system I may come back to chase this down properly.

For an additional data point, just installed 22.04 here and the AU validated fine. Logic 10.7.3, Monterey 12.3.1

@lamech I am unable to reproduce this on an updated macOS with Cardinal 22.04 (or later builds). Can you confirm you still have issues?

Updated system to latest Monterey 12.3.1 and Logic 10.7.4, re-downloaded latest Cardinal release and rescanned.

Yes, it still reports as "crashed validation." I can still use the plugins by clicking the "use" checkbox anyway, but Logic gives me nasty warnings about doing so.

When I run auvaltool on the command line it reports a floating point exception (report attached).

Note:

  • The AU component directory reports its version in Finder as "22.03" not "22.04," although the download from Github is tagged as "22.04."
  • I also notice your auvaltool is reporting its version as 1.8.0 in your report above, whereas mine says 1.10.0. Is your system up to date?

You will need a reboot after installing the new version, otherwise the old version is in cache. As long as you see 22.03, the proper tests wont run.

Ok, thanks for that guidance.

I've tried deleting the old components, rebooting, reinstalling from the 22.04 installer, then rebooting again. The component version is still being reported as 22.03. Is there an explicit cache cleanup action I can take, do you know?

The other thing I'll try is grabbing the latest nightly build instead. I wonder if something's not right with that 22.04 pkg.

Even with the latest nightly, clearing the AU cache and a reboot, I still see the version reported as 22.3.0 in auvaltool and the null pointer exception. Not sure what to try.

I'm getting the same issue:

Otherwise, it looks like all the tests are passing.
