How to adapt to new API

as I run into the need of this addon every so many years, I would like to know, how we could preserve this valuable piece of software for the future and future generations?

as stated by the developer it needs some one who is familiar with the new API to take over development.

but how much work needs actually to be done? how and where to get some one to step in?

some community effort is needed, so lets gather the required infomations, for a task and job description :)
