Minecraft MOTD has all characters escaped when sleeping

I confirm:

Symptoms
When a Minecraft server is in its sleeping state it does appear online, however the MOTD gets displayed with all the otherwise interpreted special characters displayed as plain text. After the server has awoken, the MOTD returns to normal.

Edit: I also just noticed that the number of slots is not up to date during sleep.
Reproduction
Enable sleep, then set the following MOTD:
\u00A78This \u00A72Is \u00A74Not\u00A7r\n\u00A79Displaying \u00A76Correctly
