Where can I download a pre-compiled version of the latest installer?

Open zenstorm opened this issue 8 years ago • 5 comments

The Revive github page has a really clear and simple instruction set... (see link: https://github.com/LibreVR/Revive)
...being a newbie I'm having trouble following these instructions for the Doom3VR mod.

Compiling?... Downloading Visual C++?... CMake?...

Is there a simpler way? Am I missing a link to it somewhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

As an example of what I'm looking for here is the Revive installer page. Does the RBDoom github have something similar that I've missed?

It's on the releases page. You have to scroll down a bit ;-)

Here is a direct link https://github.com/Codes4Fun/RBDOOM-3-BFG/releases/download/1.1.0-openvr12/RBDoom3BFG.1.1.0.OpenVR12.6.866337c.zip

Wow.

I've just been jumping through a whole bunch of technical hoops (installing new software, registering, activating codes, following instructions, etc, etc, etc)... for the last three hours...

Here's a UX pro tip, guys: Put that info ...AT VERY TOP OF THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!

Like this: "For the latest build (RBDoom3BFG.exe) go here: [insert link]"

It's that easy!

And for anyone who says it's my fault for not clicking the Releases link buried in the top bar?... I'm a newbie, so I didn't know to do that, and when I clicked the main link to the site (github.com/Codes4Fun/RBDOOM-3-BFG) I'm met with the instructions on the page and nothing to tell me that I don't need to follow them if I don't want to. So, naturally, I'll even argue logically, I followed them, and wasted three hours.

That's a UX failure. It's a communication failure. It's a people failure.

Sure, NOW I know to click the Releases page, but that information failure still exists for the next newbie and the next. And while it remains it simply perpetuates aggravation.

Please make the appropriate adjustments to the instructions, and do this with all your new projects, from now until your stop making projects.

And then... apply this thinking to any time you need to communicate something to the world. Never assume your audience knows what to do, because most of the time they won't. And if they do know what to do they're not going to hold it against you if you tell them anyway.

Wow. Maybe next time you just read before doing anything. It's not like the link invisible. Sorry for just trying to help bro.

Masher42, you did help. A lot! Thanks for that. It was very appreciated.

By the way, I did read through the page and I didn't see any info pointing me to the releases page or telling me there is a pre-built exe available.

Is there one for Master? I want to play it without needing any kind of VR gear, as I am a poor pleb.

Edit: Did not check for stupid, found the master releases after it kept redirecting me to openvr builds.
