How strong should boxes and crates be?

Open dynst opened this issue 7 months ago • 2 comments

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

Filling any of the 3 types of large boxes (324L capacity) with bottled water would weigh 326kg, which exceeds the weight capacity of a box_large_wood (250kg) and would require a metal crate to hold.

Would a wooden crate realistically be that weak? It can't be filled up with slightly denser cans of beans (over 359kg) or 54 bag_plastic of dry beans (363kg), either; how was anyone shipping goods and produce pre-Cataclysm, did they just waste a lot of empty space in every crate?

Solution you would like.

Pick a weight capacity for wooden crates that can handle common items, and then scale weaker cardboard boxes and stronger metal boxes to match.

(And just like now, the smaller wooden containers would, realistically, have a stronger ratio of weight capacity/volume capacity than the largest size does).

Describe alternatives you have considered.

Design separate cardboard or wooden containers that are stronger than the existing ones.

Make the existing large cardboard box container strong enough to hold bottles of water and scale wood and metal variants up stronger than that.

Increase the volume of cans and plastic bottles.

It utterly difficult to find any data about it, but general estimation for cargo transportation using wooden crates is 1 L of capacity can safely transport 2 kg of weight - i expect this number should be even bigger, as the crate data i saw allow it to be stacked, meaning entire crate would have to hold what's inside plus what's inside of same crate above, so something like 3 kg for 1 liter sound reasonable for me The issue is that i absolutely cannot find such data for smaller crates, less than 400 L specifically. I suspect the ratio would go up the smaller the crate is, assuming smaller crate is just a bigger crate scaled down, but the actual ratio is unknown for me
