Summary

Mods "[Xedra Evolved] Add playable changelings"

Purpose of change

There's playable vampires, playable werewolves, and you can play pre-human elemental fae. Time for the more humanoid fae we're familiar with from mythology.

Describe the solution

Add two species hobbies, "Unknowing Changeling, Noble" and "Unknowing Changeling, Commoner." Noble represents Oberon and Titania, or the Elf Knight from the titular song, or the queen of the faeries from Tamlin, and commoners represents the hobgoblins, pixies, redcaps, selkies, and so on. Your character was swapped shortly after birth, grew up in the mortal realms, and until the Cataclysm (or shortly before) had no idea that they weren't human. This makes them uncomfortable around iron and steel and gives them access to some fae magicks. Nobles get a bit more magical might, commoners can get tricks like shapeshifting or being extra inconspicuous or being master crafters (as long as no one is watching).

Current plan is that you'll gain extra powers after dreams, which can be triggered either with time or with certain events. On the first night they sleep, commoners will have a dream that reveals (i.e, the player can pick) their heritage--starting choices are brownie (crafty), pooka (shapeshifters), selkies (alluring and good under water), and trow (strong and tough). Right now you get a new power every 5-7 days. This is not intended to be the final system—in the end if you do nothing you’ll gain powers every 14-28 days, but you’ll be able to get extra powers by accomplishing deeds. The first time you slay a March Lord, talking to Boann, etc.

Note that your character is still a changeling--given time in the Elflands, they could probably shed what remains of their humanity. But (for example) a pooka changeling will have some limited shapeshifting and an affinity for animals, but won't be a giant animal person permanently. A selkie changeling will be at home in the water but won’t be able to turn into a seal. A trow changeling will be strong and resilient, but not as much as literal stone. But they also won't turn to stone in the sunlight, so maybe that's for the best.

Since Gracken are also a species background, I made a HERITAGE mutation category and assigned it so you can either be a Commoner Changeling, a Noble Changeling, or a Gracken, not any combination of the above.
