@ryanwohara I'm not very familiar with the update process but are you sure we are still using this repo to create images for machine executor? We maintain a few branch of images e.g. circleci/classic:edge now and I'm not sure how that works.

Any updates on this? Having to do a pyenv install 3.6.x seems a bit silly given that 3.6 has been GA for quite a while now

I have no insight into CircleCI's inner processes, but yes this repo is the one referenced in your public documentation:

Python 3.6.5 is now available, with Python 3.7 right around the corner. Any chance of ever getting something more recent than 3.5.2 in a Machine image?
