That is why u use rustdesk! https://github.com/rustdesk/rustdesk its free and open source.
Definitely open to good alternatives. I mainly use it to provide remote tech support for family/friends, so nothing major involved there. I do remember the LogMeIn crud that also got me using TeamViewer back in the day and it's sad to see them doing the same thing nowadays.
I cannot wait to see the video on setting up rustdesk server.
Tl;dr:
- Lack of Wayland-support in RustDesk
- My suggestion: KRDC (client) and Krfb (server).
- Apps by KDE, Free and Open Source.
- Presumably part of the default KDE Plasma package group.
- Wayland-specific enhancements in the works, use X11 session if you encounter problems
- For Gnome-folks there's an equivalent solution pre-installed (Settings => Sharing => Remote Desktop).
- These are Linux-specific apps but they have Windows-compatibility.
-
I looked up RustDesk and the repo page says it won't work on Wayland. :/
-
After some digging it turns out I already had KRDC and Krfb (client and server apps, respectively, by KDE) right in front of me, pre-installed on my Fedora 37 KDE Plasma system.
-
I think Wayland-support is pretty essential given the 24/7 state Wayland is in now. I've used Wayland daily for a year and been a happy camper and it seems to me that there are only edge-cases left where you need/want to run Xorg. Especially seeing the incredibly progress by KDE devs. Plasma is utterly solid.
-
I haven't actually tried these apps yet, need another system to test it with. I see people running them with Wayland both with and without issues. I also see there are some fixes and improvements in the pipeline for an april release.
-
For Gnome users there is also software included in the DE for this (Settings => Sharing => Remote Desktop). It looks pretty neat as well. I think it supports Wayland but I could be mistaken.
-
As far as I gathered, these solutions can be set up to communicate with Windows clients and servers, however I didn't spend any time looking into that as Windows is not a part of my life anymore. :)
I assume the next video will be about RustDesk. However, it would be cool to see the aforementioned apps featured as well, both KDE and Gnome solutions.
I hope to update this comment with my experiences with KRDC and Krfb on Fedora 37 KDE Plasma, assuming comment editing is supported.
Chris,
I also had an absolute "nightmare" experience with the Crooks at TeamViewer. After being a loyal PAYING customer for well over 20 years the lies, deceit & unbelievably unethical behavior exhibited was the worst I have ever seen! Granted, CONSUMER PROTECTION HERE IN THE US HAS BEEN, & CONTINUES TO BE ERODING DAY BY DAY. After supporting a business for "any length of time" (albeit small), I would certainly think out of shear gratitude a modicum of decency should be expected. Not with TeamVeiwer. My entire time doing business with TV I renewed subscription(s) every third version. Great plenty as I am a "one man shop". Even at the peak business volume never employed more than three sub-contracted individuals at one time. Yes I paid for the subs TV also. Nonetheless I had recently upgraded to Version 10 (I think) & within a month began receiving calls. Each week the number of calls would increase regardless how many times I explained all the added stuff was NEVER NEEDED or USED. It got so bad I was getting as many 6 calls per day & simply quit answering calls from TV. Then they "disguised" the call number so I could no longer see it was TV calling. Next the BIG LIE; Close to word verbatim: TeamViewer will now "DEMAND ALL CUSTOMERS TO PAY THE MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION & NO LONGER BE ALLOWED TO BUY THE LIFETIME LICENSE"! This took place less than one month after upgrading from V-10 to V-11 to the tune of OVER - $1,000! Later to discover it was all a lie! From that day forward "HAVE NEVER USED TEAMVIEWER AGAIN" & "NEVER WILL, NO MATTER WHAT"!!!! In less than a day or so discovered AnyDesk & contracted a Pro License (no longer available) & have been happy ever since. I refuse to do business with ANYONE OR ANY COMPANY / BUSINESS THAT IS NOT TRUSTWORTHY! This bad behavior generally indicates the business is "FAILING" (AKA; Circling the Bowl), & likely not too long away from going into the CRAPPER! OR,,, Worse yet; upper management in pursuit of money completely throws any sense of decency whatsoever right out the door! Personally, I think scenario # 2 fits TeamViewer's antics the past several years. I think the entire tech community should boycott TV, sit back & watch them slowly grind to a complete stop! Have these people completely forgotten about Karma ???? How they behave this way everyday at work, go home & raise their children to become productive, honest citizens as adults? Things seem to be getting worse, especially the last decade or so. I recall forty years ago nearly everyone in the IT Industry were far more ethical. The entire Internet back then was based on "reputation". Not today! Seems all that matters is sucking up every last dime "no matter what"! I'm tired of this "Dog Eat Dog" business world & long for the return of the "Win-Win" philosophy. This was the biggest factor deciding to take early retirement. Sad for sure, but this does serve one bright shinning light! It makes the entire "Open Source Community" look better than ever! I hope more people globally learn about the efforts of so many and gain a full understanding; If it wasn't for the Open Source Community we would all be $5,000 a year just for an OS & many people would NOT HAVE ACCESS AT ALL TO THE INTERNET! Sorry for the rant but I concurred; TeamViewer ended up to be "THE ABSOLUTE WORST COMPANY I DID BUSINESS WITH IN OVER 40 YEARS"! SHAME, SHAME, SHAME !!!! Water has a funny way of finding its own level. I'll bide my time & hope I witness the Karmic events play out. It will happen, sooner or later!!!
@chukfinley I agree with you too. It's actually easier to use on mobile than TeamViewer or similar software.
who would even use this? there is Quick assist, it's integrated in Windows! If I have to use a remode desktop software I use anydesk/windows remote desktop
