Ayaneo slide restart unexpectedly after 10-15 minutes of gaming
Ayaneo slide restart unexpectedly after 10-15 minutes of gaming, i tried the following games:
- Monster Hunter World
- Elden Ring
- Dark Souls Remaster
I tried in multiple tdp settings, the machine will restart regardless, i also open the bench-marking pannel, temperature is around 68-70 celsius
Would like to ask if there is anyway to find why it is reboot? i tried find logs in /var but i cannot find anything related to the reboot
Device Spec: 7840U + 8gb ram
This is a known issue, slide will randomly restart when running on any Linux distribution

As I don't have a slide to test with, is there anything you're aware of that causes this? dmesg or journalctl output would be helpful.

I don't have testing device now. But based on my previous tests and the feedback from current testers, there doesn't seem to be any abnormalities in dmesg and journalctl.
I've got this issue and am willing to test/help debug. Tried ChimeraOS, Bazzite, now on Steamfork - all randomly reboot, sometimes after 15 minutes, sometimes after an hour. Watching journalctl -f via ssh doesn't seem to show anything relevant.
journalctl -k -b 2
To view the latest 2 boots? If that fails I would do a test with a linux distro with no guj compiling the kernel to stress ram and cpu. If it reboots I would start blacklisting drivers attempting to catch if it's a driver.
Can you use watch -n 1 sensors and track the temperatures before it shuts down?
journalctl -k -b 2
I don't see anything that indicates issues in the journal - see below.
I'll have sensors runnning over ssh and report back after the next reboot.
(deck@Slide ~)$ journalctl -k -b 2

This is a known issue, slide will randomly restart when running on any Linux distribution
Any distro as in generic distros like Ubuntu or custom Arch install?

I may poke at it a little with ReignOS/Arch and see if any kernel settings change anything. Do you know if it would always happen after the system had any kind of sleep? Or would it happen when no sleep had taken place since boot?

I disable all sleep setting in gnome / KDE, it will always reboot unexpectedly
The only thing i see in common is when the device is warm-ish, it will reboot, but i don't see any log in journalctl....

Ya that was my other thought, is some temp sensor issue triggering something odd in the bios or maybe some voltage issue if something gets to hot. I know some tantalum capacitors can behave differently depending on temps.
If I hit the issue, I may open up the device and see if simply cooling it more with a fan doesn't prevent the issue. Maybe it just needs a copper heatsink somewhere that would fix the problem.

If it is bios, it should restart even in windows 🤔? (just a guess, i am not very knowledgeable in this area) but in windows i don't see this kind of issue
but in windows i don't see this kind of issue
O I was told it also happens in Windows. That would be good if it doesn't.
@darkcl Got a Antec Core-HS today, which is the same hardware. Going through and updating BIOS, controller firmware, EC firmware etc. I'm assuming you did the same?
I'll run the "Monster Hunter World" benchmark and see what happens. Or play something demanding like "A Plague Tale: Requiem" on ReignOS/Arch and see if it hits anything.
Also did you have the screen slip up or down while playing in your tests?
So after some testing so far some odd things (I updated BIOS and firmware).
- While on a Dock it stopped charging (only saw that once)
- It seems to generate a lot of heat vs other devices.
- When I put it to sleep, the screen never goes off (but touch stops etc)
- Under heavy load with "A Plague Tale: Requiem" there were never any restarts BUT as soon as game quit and fans spin down it reset.
- Game only runs correctly in Weston not Gamescope
- It seems like maybe it happens with load change if its using high core-count vs not idk. Given it would happen if it wasn't plugged in verifying Steam install
With the Cage compositor I'm not seeing any restarts so far. If that stays true, I can use "wlr-randr --output eDP-1 --off/on" before/after sleep with a systemd service to handle it for wlroots. Setting screen brightness in Wayland to 0 doesn't seem to work FYI.
Maybe there is a better way to tell screen to go off and fix this correctly but I'm not sure what that is atm (NOTE: "xset dpms force off" works with X11 as well). Also note: "ddcutil detect" doesn't show any supported displays.
I'm also at 100% battery with AC. And will test more on battery to confirm Cage still remains stable. Will report back if anything changes. Hopefully its display related somehow with stability.
Running "Monster Hunter World" had zero issues in Cage too FYI (just don't use Frame-Gen).
I did end up getting a reset with Cage although was playing with sleep power settings. Now testing amdvlk drivers instead of mesa radeon ones to see what its like on the hardware. Also Note, testing with X11 I never ran into a reset yet (so I may play around in X11 more later).
Just poking at it some more on and off.
More testing (still need to confirm more) but playing games using amdvlk under X11 I've not had any hard resets yet. Last night I was playing "Inside game" on the device and had the screen go black BUT then screen came back on a second later and everything was fine (game still running etc). Again, need to see if this is reproducible and if so it may mean I could grab some logs of value.
So far with X11 I've never had a hard restart in any condition so will continue to play around under X11 testing stuff.
Don't want to spam here but will continue to document what I've tested so at least someone else who comes along might have an idea to try something different if I decide to give up.
So had it restart once in X11 when testing the other night.
However I'm now starting to test some BIOS settings instead to see what happens. Based on odd factors of this Ayaneo Slide device I've set a couple BIOS settings here and so far the device is actually running cooler it seems like (but I need to of course test it much longer on and off)
I know fTPM can cause issues on Win11 with bad or old BIOS versions (I've seen it happen personally). So I disabled this. Also disabled Core-Watchdog as this can cause hard system restarts and maybe its malfunctioning somehow. And last I set IGD to LCD because it defaults to CRT.
BIOS SETTINGS ---
Core Watchdog Timer = Disabled IGD - AmdGop Output Priority = LCD fTPM = Disabled SecureBoot = Disabled
Speaking of BIOS settings, do you have it set to one of the Modern Standby options or to S3 enable? I've noticed sometimes during one of its random reboots it takes a longer time and reverts the BIOS settings from Modern Standby to S3. Not sure if this is related.

I think the device only reports supporting S3 and nothing else
Testing on battery causes the issue far more than on power. I'm now testing battery with these
SecureBoot = Disabled
Core Watchdog Timer = Disabled
IGD - AmdGop Output Priority = LCD, DFP1, CRT
Security Device Support = Disabled
fTPM = Disabled (might be helping keep temp down)

Does anyone have the "Antec Core HS Ryzen 8840U" version? (aka Ayaneo Slide 8840U)
If so I'm wondering if someone couldn't open "System Information" in Win11 and tell me what the BIOS version and date are? I have the 7840U version and wanting to know if the BIOS versions differ etc.
Someone was told this is the case by a Ayaneo person BUT we're trying to confirm. Supposedly that device doesn't have an issue with Linux BUT I'm not getting enough information about that device. On Antecs site, there is no specific downloads for this model either. So can't confirm BIOS version that way.
Ok possible good news. I've ran multiple long play tests with zero issues now. I'm waiting for a Core HS Ryzen 8000 model to confirm on that one as well.
In short no other kernel mode settings besides "acpi=strict" set seems to solve the issue. I've been testing this with ReignOS a bunch and its been perfect so far. Of course more testing should be done.
Multiple people have now confirmed "acpi=strict" is the fix.
How do you change the acpi value/ where can adjust that setting?

ChimeraOS you can't manually change this as its an atomic distro. And it sounds like support needs to be added to Chimera so it can change the kernel mode settings per platform.
So you can use ReignOS which does this setting for you or exposes these options in its ControlCenter. Or you can try BazziteOS which added support BUT not Bazzite is 10-15fps slower vs Arch on this hardware.
Wow @zezba9000 you are god. We've been hunting this issue for some time, initially I thought it's a SteamFork issue (tested in 2024), but then got it on bare Arch / Artix, and had to put slide on a shelf for some time :)
This acpi=strict setting actually makes the difference, I've been able to compile a kernel on-device (slide restarted few times before without that fix and I decided to google if there is finally a solution hehe).
No reboots on 7500Mhz as well 👌
Hi! I recently bought the antec core hs 8840u and installed the official steam os on it. The device restarts after 15-20 minutes and I am going crazy. Can someone PLEASE tell me how to change the acpi settings on the official steam os.

You can't and if you do, it could revert it at any point later after it updates. ReignOS will just do this for you FYI.
