Description

Cap recordings consistently fail within 15-60 seconds with "Stream was stopped by the system" error on macOS Sequoia 15.0. The recording starts normally but macOS's ScreenCaptureKit terminates the stream mid-recording with no warning. This happens regardless of:

  • Display resolution (tested at both 3024x1964 and lower)
  • Recording duration (fails even on 15-second recordings)
  • Frame rate (tested at 120fps and 60fps)
  • Whether camera/audio are enabled or disabled

Error from logs: ERROR recording:studio_recording:screen-out:{task="screen-capture"}: cap_recording::output_pipeline::core: Task failed: Stream was stopped by the system

Reproduction

  1. Launch Cap on macOS Sequoia 15.0
  2. Grant all required permissions (Screen Recording, Microphone, Camera)
  3. Start any recording (full screen, window, or region)
  4. Recording begins successfully
  5. Within 15-60 seconds, recording terminates with "Stream was stopped by the system"
  6. Happens consistently on every recording attempt

Additional Context

  • Cap version: [Run this command to find out: /Applications/Cap.app/Contents/MacOS/Cap --version]
  • Operating system, version: macOS Sequoia 15.0 (Build 25A354, reported as ProductVersion 26.0)
  • Device: MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon (M-series chip)
  • Frame rates attempted: 120fps and 60fps (both fail)
  • Resolutions attempted: 3024x1964 native and lower scaled resolutions (both fail)

Debug logs attached: [Attach your log file from /Users/owner/Library/Logs/so.cap.desktop/cap-desktop.log.2025-10-10]

Additional observations:

  • Permission reset via tccutil reset ScreenCapture does not resolve the issue
  • Issue appears to be specific to macOS Sequoia 15's stricter ScreenCaptureKit enforcement
  • No other applications or system resources appear to be causing conflicts
  • Activity Monitor shows normal CPU/Memory usage before crash

Workaround: Using OBS Studio works without issues on the same system, suggesting this is a Cap-specific compatibility issue with Sequoia 15's ScreenCaptureKit [changes.](url)
