[Feature Request] Multiple Searches, Pasteboard & Add Term After Search Name
I recently discovered the Swift Selection Search add-on, it’s honestly amazing I’d easily rate it 5 stars. There’s only three options I find it lacks and I’d greatly appreciate it if it was added. Being capable of doing multiple searches to the same site by highlighting different words from either a table or text. The other option it lacks is being capable of highlighting a text and then adding a term right afterwards. For example: if you highlight a movie like The Thing, it would be nice to be capable of adding 1982 to help your search. It would be nice if this option was also implanted to multiple searches. The last option that it lacks is paste from clipboard. For example: copying a book title offline, like The Art Of War & finding the ISBN # for the book from amazon. Is there any information regarding these two matters if they will or ever be added to this add-on?
Hey there! :)
First of all, I apologize for the delay responding to this. I had little time these past weeks.
Secondly, thanks for the kind words and suggestions. :) Onto them...
Being capable of doing multiple searches to the same site by highlighting different words from either a table or text.
Not sure I got this one. Do you mean selecting multiple bits of text in a page (for example using Ctrl+Click) and searching for all of them instead of joining all text in one search? Or is it something else?
The other option it lacks is being capable of highlighting a text and then adding a term right afterwards.
In fact I would find this useful as well. I've thought about adding a text field to the popup, displayed above the icons. It would contain the selected text, which you could then edit before searching. But I'm having trouble keeping up with all things I have to do in SSS currently, so this might take a while.
Again, I might not be understanding the first suggestion, but how would this work with multiple selections, if you don't mind explaining it a bit more?
The last option that it lacks is paste from clipboard.
I've had this request a few times now. :) I'd like to understand how this would fit in the current SSS way of working, or if it is simply supposed to be "separate" from the idea of searching text selections. I ask this because SSS is meant to work over selections, and pasting does not require a selection, but only to have an input field selected. Furthermore, there is always the "Right Click -> Paste" way heheh.
Sorry for all the questions. I would greatly appreciate if you can detail these a bit more. Thanks! :)
Cheers, Daniel
No problem, thanks for taking the time to respond.
You are correct, I do mean selecting multiple bits of text and using ctrl + click and searching for them all instead of combing into one search.
Due to the number of websites I’ve added to the add-on I personally don’t use the popup icons since there would be too many and there’s no option to choose/show my favorites only. It would be a nice if you added an option to select/show only your favorite tabs and in what order as well.
I think you should add another option/icon in the context menu called something like Advanced search for: that gives you additional options in a new window. It could have check box options for on/off and tabs for add term/terms. The options could include: Search separate by highlighted text, Add term to all searches, Add term to individual searches then you select you’re website.
It would be great for group searches like: different school assignments involving learning different categories/terms/functions/etc, looking up books/games/movies/music/tv series/etc, google apps, isbn #’s for books & etc. The + term could represent a year, artist, creator, genre & etc.
There’s obviously a lot more purposes than just these and I assume many people have other usages for it. It would just be a great way to do multiple searches at once which could save you hours of time/work.
As for the paste from clipboard it could be something as simple as right clicking on a webpage and adding a context menu option for loading a notepad webpage like: data:text/html, and just call it something like SSS Notepad.
This way if your trying to look up multiple things for a school assignment/book or whatever task you’re doing whether it’s on Microsoft word, a pdf file or etc you can paste a table or text or list or whatever into a place and highlight the things you want to search for. People like having the convenience and less add-ons than more after all.
I tried to give a more detailed explanation this time to show a more general idea of what I am thinking/hoping for. If you can implement these options though I’d be more than willing to donate like $50-$100 or so in a month or two. I would offer more but I am broke with school debt, so yea… Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read and respond.

I see. :)

I'm not sure what you mean here. :) You can reorder the engines and enable only those you want to see on the popup. What you can't currently do is select different engines for the popup and the context menu (the best you can is show ALL engines in the context menu and filter for the popup, using the respective option).

I'll have to think about these. While it looks useful for mass searches like you describe, it would require investing a great deal of time in it. I'm already way behind on features because of lack of time. ;) There are a few that I feel are kind of urgent (like #85) but still haven't managed to do them.

OK, I can see what you mean now. Thanks for explaining the paste option. :)

It's much clearer now, yes, thanks. :)

Ah, I won't ask for anything, but thanks for being willing to donate even in your condition. :) I can hardly live up to the expectation and unfortunately I doubt I can even begin these features soon, due to lack of time and sometimes motivation.
But they were all noted down. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Hi, I 've just logged on for some other reason, but was looking for "Paste" option, as I am interested in it as well, and here I found it, so I wouldn't open another Issue. I often "reuse" the search tab for modifying the search terms. Usually, I would just select the previous search term, and insert the new one. However - I also have "Easy Guestures N" installed, so when I right click on the selection - I get the "Pie", and it complicates the whole process. A simple "paste" would be great. The selected text would be replaced with copied one from clipboard... Thanks for your time, and for making this great extension. Cheers,
Hi @J0n1k4, sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by "paste". The original request was a more complicated pasteboard, but it seems to me like you're asking for something like a "paste" engine that you can click. However, the "pie" from the other addon would also get in the way of SSS, so I probably misunderstood what you mean. Can you explain, please?
Cheers! Daniel

Nope - the "Pie" appears only when I right click (the selection or...). The SSS shows as soon as I select the letters... So - There is a "copy", then there is a "open as link" button... - I would appreciate an option to have a plain "paste" button. Once again - thanks for your time and effort, cheers, Nika
Ah I see, so it would be for editable text fields only. The problem currently is that SSS doesn't have "context aware" engines, so all engines show up all the time. I guess this is a case where an engine only makes sense in a certain situation. Something to think about! ;)
Shouldn't it have a "check box" in setings weather to show it or not? I don't mind having it availabe all the time. Who don't need it - will not check the box... Something to think about... :) cheers
I meant that the paste icon would only work if selecting text in an editable text field, not when selecting "normal" text on a page, so it should only appear in that case, and that's not currently a "thing". ;)
