This is a smali / dexlib2 issue. You can work around by rewriting the smali / deleting problematic classes. I'll update to the new dexlib version when it becomes available...
I'll leave it open to remind me to update dexlib versions. ;)

Thanks for the report. I'm also leaning towards this being a dexlib issue. If you can't reproduce with just baksmali, can you share a Dex file which causes the issue?
Thanks for the extra detail and the fix. I'll have to read the java specs to see what's technically allowed and see if I can improve what you have here....

One workaround, though not good, is to only optimize classes / methods you care about. Some methods optimize without upsetting dexlib.
