Mail/Report/DNS

Hello Friends. I am implementing a cacti in version 1.2.30, I have installed the following plugins:

  • Cycle 4.3
  • Monitor 2.8
  • Thold 1.8.2
  • Wheatermap 1.3.1.

I am configuring the reports by mail. To send the reports, the cacti to use the internal domain but the emails are failing.

When I do the analysis I find the following issue:

If I run nslookup to DNS, internal resolves the internal ip of the mail server.

If I run nslookup to the external DNS, it resolves to the public ip of the mail server.

Now, from the cacti server, we do a test:

Cacti makes a request to the internal DNS, asks for the IP of dns.google, then it generates another SNI query to dns.google and finally, it resolves the public IP and at this point the mail fails

In summary, if I configure the internal DNS server on the CACTI, the resolution it performs goes to google first and google resolves to the mail server.

Attached is my mail configuration in the cacti:

Okay, reading through this. This is all controlled by the phpmailer. So, the right place to open this request will be there site. It's a very mature product. So, when you figure out how to work around your issue, you can report back. From a Cacti perspective, you should likely use SMTP instead of either the PHP Mail Functions or Sendmail. It gives you more options.
