I don't think you need to rewrite the blitter, just use condition variables for synchronization with main thread.

Can you try reproducing this bug with commit e5268075fb35ee51798dc31c0c17507d7ac4df91? This should fix it.

With what error? At exactly where does it crash?

I don't think this is fit to be a standalone library because of the non-commercial clause in the license it uses, effectively making it completely useless for GPL-licensed projects.

It basically brings back the atomic KMSDRM backend that was removed due to hardware compatibility issues (SoCs with Panfrost GPUs doesn't support it properly to my knowledge).

The atomic codepath didn't support AMD GPU systems with analog output setups (they do not work with Display Core enabled in the kernel driver) and certainly had very restricted OS...

It's not a flaw but a feature. The fbdev backend was axed in SDL2

You *still* need SimpleDRM for that. And right now the KMSDRM framebuffer support is handled by higher level code which still needs a GPU to function and still hasn't been...
