Chile adds deaths in probable cases to official counts, spike in deaths March 21, 2022

Open CSSEGISandData opened this issue 2 years ago • 3 comments

Hello all,

On March 21, 2022, Chile altered their definition of a COVID-19 death to be more aligned with that method recommended by the World Health Organization. This has removed the requirement for patients to have had a positive PCR test and has therefore resulted in a large increase in identified deaths. Read more details in the announcement from the Ministry of Health.

We are investigating a back distribution and will update this announcement with any changes.

Is this still in progress? Looking at Our World In Data now (which I believe uses this as source) things appear inconsistent - the cumulative plot shows the jump, but the daily or 7-days plot does not. Or should I raise this with them (in the past when they I have questioned their data they have sent me here)?

On our (OWID) side we've indeed hidden the correction from the daily charts, to avoid showing a huge spike in the number of deaths on March 21. But the data dump is still there and visible in the cumulative version of the chart.

Ah, OK. If that's by choice then ignore me, thanks.
