Use Case Title Add new CEDS elements and relationships between courses

Use Case Description North Carolina has multiple data elements that capture various relationships between courses: course number equivalent, prior system codes, retired course codes, postsecondary course code, postsecondary course name, corequisites and prerequisites. These elements and the relationships between them that NC uses to link certain course is not currently supported by the CEDS K12 model. Definitions of the requested elements and how they link are delineated below.

Use Case Background North Carolina has multiple data elements that capture various relationships between courses: course number equivalent, prior system codes, retired course codes, postsecondary course code, postsecondary course name, corequisites and prerequisites. These elements and the relationships between them that NC uses to link certain courses is not currently supported by the CEDS K12 model. Definitions of the requested elements and how they link are delineated below.

Requested element and relationships between course codes

  1. Course Number Equivalent – when two or more courses have different course numbers but are considered equivalent courses and can be substituted when scheduling a student.
  2. Prior System Code – Course codes used during the implementation of a prior system and are potentially needed for reporting purposes.
  3. Retired Course Codes – Course codes that were retired and are potentially needed for reporting purposes.
  4. Corequisite – this relationship is need when two courses are needed to be taken at the same time. For example, Biology class time and the Biology lab time.
  5. Prerequisite – This relationship is needed when one or more courses are required to have been successfully completed before a student can be registered for a specific course.
  6. Postsecondary Course Code – Postsecondary course codes associated with K12 courses.
  7. Postsecondary Course Name – Postsecondary course names associated with the corresponding postsecondary course code.

Any given set of courses can have multiple relationships between them.
