Homing lock sound too quiet

Open CDarrow opened this issue 10 years ago • 6 comments

Needs the option to be much louder. [Requested by: Clone7, Xciter]

Mainly smart locks, esp when coming from behind.

Homing warnings are played by play_homing_warning at a fixed volume of F1_0. The delay between warnings decreases with distance to the nearest homing weapon, giving the perception of increased volume. The game does not track what weapon is closest, only the distance to the closest weapon. If you want type-dependent volume, you could kludge it by scaling the distance or you could add a second tracking variable to let play_homing_warning check the type of the weapon.

It's not homers vs. smarts that's the issue -- the sounds are the same. It's the homing lock sound in general. It is already being played at the maximum volume, but I can turn the volume of everything -else- down and let X turn the master volume up. But this has to be vetted with the community to make sure nobody considers it cheating.

Not sure to mark this as a bug or an enhancement. It seems to me if they are already playing at max volume, it would be an enhancement, but how does this compare to D1X or even the original game? More testing would be needed to be sure.

It's an enhancement. It seems to be a legitimate need for some pilots, but it would need to be seriously discussed with the community. Even as an option, it may be considered an unwelcome change.

Bumping this because I have a feeling this is a computer-dependent thing. I have no problem hearing locks over things on my primary computer, but on my wife's laptop they drown into the background. They play, but are so low you can't hear them. I'll do some testing when I get home from the LAN.
