Feature Request - A Plain Base Image Is Preferred for Outreach activities.
Request - For the purposes of outreach activities, it is much more preferable to have an option to change the default terrestrial base image of the globe to a plan or abstract one.
For outreach it is important for the toolbox user to focus on what is being communicated. The terrestrial base layer draws away the user focus. A basic base layer lessens distraction to the user of the feature on the globe being communicated.
We have modified our local code to allow this ; screenshot attached.
It would be nice to have this as an option under "Preferences".
@esacci nice work! Not that this is the same static imagery (Natural Earth 2) we use when there is no internet connection.
However, it has the disadvantage that it is only of very low resolution. We should find a free Natural Earth 2 mapping service.
The services are no longer online or have a different address. We may setup a Cate Tile Map Server to publish the 1:10m maps of Natural Earth 2: https://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/10m-raster-data/10m-natural-earth-2/.
