What happened?

PopOS running on multiple machines, using Waterfox G4.0.8

Waterfox is set as default browser, and whenever a link is clicked on any external source (e.g. Thunderbird, a PDF reader, etc.) a new window with a blank tab opens. Links clicked inside of Waterfox are working fine. Extensions installed have been toggled off individually and tested to make sure they aren't the cause (Privacy Badger, AdBlock Plus, Sponsor Block, HTTPS Everywhere, Honey). This behavior has repeated on every machine tested to date. Firefox does not behave the same way and instead opens external links in new tabs and properly displays the page.

Not super worried about the new window aspect as much as the blank tab aspect, but it's replicated on every machine so far, and since PopOS and Waterfox are my current default OS/Browser combo and it's been going on for a couple months, figured I should bring it up.

The closest bug I've found to this is: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1508803

Unfortunately I'm unable to replicate this and I suspect it is going to be OS related, but it's always possible it's config related.

There's a few things that you could try to help narrow down the issue:

1. Which version of Firefox is it working on?
2. Does it work on Firefox ESR91 (if it does not, we might be able to fix by knowing the good FF version)
3. Try building Waterfox with all lines in browser/app/profile/000-waterfox.js commented out/deleted.

I have this same problem. Any external request to open the browser opens a new window redirected to the home page. Things making the request: npm 'live-server' package, git credential manager web login, any link in gnome-terminal. OS: Linux Mint 21 Waterfox: G51.1
