Probe requests still sent with WPP on

Open solsticedhiver opened this issue 7 years ago • 6 comments

Using hoover.pl (from https://github.com/xme/hoover) I was able to receive probe requests from my phone where Wifi Privacy Police is installed and running. The phone is a Moto G 4G running LineageOS 14.1 with android 7.1.

I wonder if WPP is working because I was able to get 3 probe requests (aka 3 known SSID) from my phone as if WPP was not installed or working.

protection of private life is on in the app.

Or may be I misunderstood what WPP i capable of doing ?

Thank you for your bug report!

Could you give me some more information?

  1. Do you have both 'privacy protection' and 'data protection' set to 'on' in the WPP app?
  2. Are you certain the probe requests are coming from your smartphone, and not from another device scanning for Wi-Fi networks in the neighborhood?
  3. Are you consistently getting probe requests? What is the interval for probe requests you're seeing? Are you seeing them for a short span of time, or are they being sent out at any time?
  4. Could you provide me with a logcat of WPP's output at the time a probe request was sent?

Kind regards, Bram

  1. Yes I have both enabled.
  2. yes the mac address from the probe request matches my phone's wifi interface mac adress
  3. I got approx. 25 of them in 1 or 2 minutes.
  4. I attach a logcat. But I enabled all (main, radio, events) so it could be huge. 2017-03-08-15-31-56.txt.gz

Wow, that's definitely a lot. Are they all including an SSID? Or are they broadcast probe requests?

I attach a logcat. But I enabled all (main, radio, events) so it could be huge. I'll send an email to you

I don't seem to have received your logcat yet. Could you try to re-send it?

Your email did not work. I attached the logcat here above. Yes. From what I understand, hoover.pl catches probe requests with SSID only.

I could try a tcpdump capture to tell you how often they are sent.

To make it clear in the hope that progress is made on this, probe requests are not sent when I am connected to a wifi AP like at home. Unlike many phones.

But it's when I am away, or for testing purpose when I shutdown my AP, that I can see probe requests.
