Gibberish output

I know this is an older project, so don't know if I'll get a response to this or not. Trying to work with digispark on raspbian. I've got coding it and all working, trying to get a console like terminal running now so that I can debug stuff. Found this ruby gem and figured I'd give it a try. It connects to the digispark just fine, but running the basic example Echo script, it just returns gibberish.
