Images sometimes do not show in conversation when opening to it from a notification

When an image is sent (presumably with a caption attached), if you try to open to that conversation from the notification, sometimes the image won't show and to resolve it, you have to back out of the conversation to the main chat list then go back into it for the image and its caption to appear. It doesn't seem to happen consistently and is an intermittent issue.
