5 years of Bitcoin Design celebration
The community was started right around July 2020, so we're now 5 years into this journey. This is a great time to look back at what happened, at the many efforts and achievements of people in and around the community.
@mouxdesign and @paperpsych have already started looking into this, discussing and gathering material and creating an outline for what this might look like. The latest is that at the core might be a sub-page on the website (e.g. "bitcoin.design/5"). It would cover sections like:
- Big celebratory banner ("5 years of Designing Bitcoin For Everyone, With Everyone")
- Proof-of work stats, like 600+ calls, 40+ design reviews, x bitcoin projects collaborated with...
- Mission & principles
- Timeline (design guide launch, designathon 1 & 2, foundation launch...)
- Ecosystem - all the projects that the community has touched in some way
- Events, collaborations and other initiatives
- Project highlights - especially long-term community projects like the guide
- Testimonials & quotes
- World map showing where members are (not sure we even know)
- How it all works - behind the scenes look
- The role of the foundation
- Learnings
- What's next
- How you can participate
- Lots of thanks you's
Lots can change here, feel free to suggest other topics or content.
We could also post this report as a series of blog posts or social media posts, have a community call about it to reminisce, etc. It could be 20 pages or 2 pages, totally up to us.
What do you think? Good idea? What would you like to see happen? Would you like to chip in?
For point 2, I think it would be cool to display the stats in a more engaging way, similar to how Spotify does its yearly wrapped. It could be as simple as a scroll-to-reveal interaction with some animations. I could probably prototype it with some quick vibe code.
One thing I think is missing is testimonials. Could we reach out to the projects the community has contributed to and ask for a few quotes? We could add them at the bottom of the page or somewhere else on the site.
They have testimonials on point 8. I think the ideas are cool.

Thanks! I missed that.
Brief update. Paper and I are trying to rough in the content for the sections this week. It's a lot of gathering statistics and links, lists of projects, etc. Hopefully that's in a good place by the end of the week. Then we'll have a better sense of the content and what our next steps will be. There will likely be a lot of outreach to do next week to get those quotes and input from long-term contributors, projects, etc. And figuring out the visual direction will also become more of a priority.
Since we don't want to spend a huge amount of time on web development, our thinking so far has been to stick with a mostly static page within our existing bitcoin.design framework, and focus more on writing and static graphics. But maybe we can push it a little further, something to explore and discuss.
How does one participate? Are the calendar meetings now empty? Nothing seems to be there?
@utidon we've so far just been working mostly online/async. It's pretty tedious work at the moment gathering all the various events and projects involved (see screenshot), from GitHub, newsletter, Twitter, etc. You're not really missing anything exciting. You're welcome to be part of that if you'd like, but it might make more sense to share more once we've done that and the focus moves towards what to include and how to tell the story. Just let me know.
Gathering projects... once it's in good shape, getting some more eyes on this will be super helpful.
The sheet with the events (53) and projects (87) is in decent shape now. There are probably some things missing, and some will be sorted out as get move into layout, but this should be a solid foundation. It would be amazing if you could review and see what not right yet. Here's the doc.
Next week we can look into layouts for those sections. For the event timeline, we may want to collapse some of the repeat events. For example, we're now in the fourth year of helping with Summer of Bitcoin, so we can just mention it once and add "2022 to today". We can also look into color coding projects, events, education, etc. Will be fun to figure that out.
Other lists we may need to prepare are sponsors, organizations, and grantees. Might get hard to really be comprehensive there, especially for things that happened 4-5 years ago. But let's see.
I'll also post about this in the spread-the-word channel. We can use that one to discuss this project.

I recorded a video on where we are with the wireframes so far. Check it out. Here's the design file.
It is coming together. There's still some larger content work to do, mostly on the more editorial parts:
- Finding people willing to share their journeys for "Community stories"
- Gathering testimonials
- Narrowing in on the directions for the "What we've learned", "What's next", and "Thank you" sections
Your feedback on any of this would be amazing. Let us know what you think.
The design and content are taking more shape.
I've been building out the site:
There is a bit of content missing in the testimonials and community stories, but I think the site is in good shape now for a proper review - top to bottom. I'm about to see in Discord if anyone wants to join a review session on Thursday. My goal would be to push the site live and share it beginning of next week.
All feedback appreciated.
Also just put it on the five.bitcoin.design subdomain. Turns out just the letter 5 does not work as a subdomain due to some technical issues. So five it is.
The site is ready to be shared. The home page banner is also a promo for the report now (via this PR).
The home page banner should at some point be switched back to the rotating set we've had before. Then we should still make the 5 year report site available from elsewhere. Since it's a pretty big milestone, maybe we can add a line of text to the homepage directly. I propose end of October to make that change.
