OLH had a discussion about this today and felt that this is worthwhile. Some authors might find it off-putting if a journal requires ORCiDs, but the option should exist for journal editors to make it mandatory for their journal, along with clear communication about the requirement in the submission guidelines, to the effect of 'This journal requires an ORCID ID on submission'.

The setting could have multiple levels:

  • An ORCiD is required of all authors (this would require #145)
  • An ORCiD is required of the corresponding author
  • ORCiDs are strongly recommended for all authors -- this would entail configurable reminder messages that the author would see during the submission process wherein the editor could reason for using ORCiD
  • ORCiDs are optional (current interface)

This is great news. I believe the possibility for setting this on a journal to journal basis is a very good solution. The two levels with ORCID of all authors vs. ORCID of corresponding author is quite nice, too.
