Integrating BMW's Online Search/Google Search possible?

Open LACNR opened this issue 3 years ago • 6 comments

Good morning, good evening,

Unfortunatly I had to notice during a drive in my 2016 model that BMW apparently disabled (or updates) integrated apps in their BMW Online network this week which might be due to the fact that this summer the 3G signal will be disbaled in germany and probably other countries, which means vehicles that only support up to 3G will be downgraded to a 2G connection, although according to BMW key functions will work with 2G but eventually require longer reactions times, other features can't work under 2G. BMW's build before 2014 are affected definitely, build after 2014 can have a 4G Module as it was spread across the entire lineup however only build since July 2017 have a 4G support from factory as standard guaranteed.

News, Weather and Office are functional, but Online Search and the shortcut applications such as StreetView, Flickr, Satellite, Restaurants, Hotels, Parking, Gas Stations and more are under construction or research according to the Information display when selecting affected app.

Is there the possibility to actually add the or a similar Online Search (which was powered by Google) to find a list of destinations (restaurants, hotels, theaters and so on) by current and other location when using AAiD?

I know Google Assistent (and other voice assistents) is supported by BMW from factory using the steering wheel button and AAiD does show up Bixby and Google to activate the it as well, but is there the Chance to visually Display what you are searching for?

I wasn't sure if I should open this, if this is a dead-end feel free to delete or close this :)

If I'm not mistaken this would kinda be covered under #43, right @hufman ?

Partly I guess but I don't mean it in terms of navigation, when using BMW's Online Search you could individually search for POIs e.g. a restaurant at your current location/your desired location or choose from a category such as hotel, parking, restaurant, malls, cafès, hospitals and so on. It will then suggest you a list of restaurants around you (or in the city you are looking for) with the closest on the top and the farest on the last page, additionally it will show if they are open or closed and the distance. Selecting one gives you the options to call, email and rate them and read previous ratings but also show them on the google map. I did use that to reserve us a table for example or get an idea of available parking lots or restaurants, very helpful when you are in foreign cities and your passenger has trouble filter out potential favs via apple/google maps itself.

Oh that's cool! I currently only use Online Search for navigation searching, so thank you for sharing the other ways you use it. I've added it to the wishlist in the Addon project.

Ohh I see :) I used it sometimes locally but always used it when on a trip such as skiing vacation or just going shopping in a different city to have an idea whats available if we're not familiar with the POI there. So I'm glad I could share the ways I use it and potentially help on something in the future, thank you great to hear it something that can be considered and you added it to the wishlist.

With the deactivation of 3G in Germany, the TCB(3G) and Combox Telematic (3G) will connect do 2G (hardware restrictions). Only services working then will be (intelligent) emergency call, concierge service, remote services and RTTI. Other online services would need higher bandwidth and therefore won´t work with 2G. In the meantime, if you still have active subscriptions and want to use them, you should search for a coder, who changes the cellular connection from Combox/TCB to BT-tether through your smartphone connection. i have an X3 with NBT+TCB(3G) and at least for me RTTI is still working and some online functions like weather, even though it´s a bit slower than before.

Thanks for your reponse, according to the BMW websites FAQ when 3G will be deactivated and the car isn't supportimg 4G, services e.g. such as BMW Online's News and Weather will still be working with 2G but eventually have longer reponse times. They didn't say what will not work and didn't say all functions that will work. So far News, Weather and Office (Email) are still working via the integrated simcard, although I don't know for sure if my car is restricted to 3G.

I'm not sure if the BT-Thethering would be an option for me as it disbales audio function, as I'm listening to music via BT everytime unless my gf is with she connects her iPhone.

Maybe using an external secondary simcard with a portable/mobile WLAN router would work too or some old phone as connector.
