How about the barrier block on the top of the island? Yes, it will mean that noone will be able to place anything there, but it is invisible for survival.

As I do not know how performance will be hit, if f.e. someone destroys all blocks on the island area.

Or Barrier block in 4 top corners of the island... Or a configurable option:

• bedrock in blueprint
• [any] block on the top (255) in middle
• [any] 4 blocks in the top (255) corners of island
