Add support for sending selected device over the network

What workfow do you want to improve?

I want to use an ESP8266 to make a macro pad with status leds for active device, keeping it in sync with windows, but i need it to send and receive in a very simple way the current output device and it's status.

How to make it better?

It is possible to add some simple function like sending and receiving JSON messages everytime a device is switched?

Any alternative?

Even sending something over serial would be better than nothing.
