Explore better ways of displaying filter options

We currently use the filter button as a trigger to open a collapsible section right below the heading or search/filter bar. This isn't ideal, since it pushes the actual content of the page down to show filter options. It also doesn't have an indicator to show that the results are filtered either. If we're keeping the filter options in the same location, they should be more compact and displayed in a row. If not, they can potentially appear as a side panel to the left of the results area.
