function definition: "realize process of a certain sort"
In the OWL version of BFO-2020 the skos:definition
for function
reads:
(Elucidation) A function is a disposition that exists in virtue of its bearer's physical make-up & this physical make-up is something the bearer possesses because it came into being either through evolution (in the case of natural biological entities) or through intentional design (in the case of artefacts) in order to realize processes of a certain sort
Should the phrase "in order to realize processes of a certain sort" by "in order to be realized in processes of a certain sort"? The current reading suggests (to me) that a function can realize a process.
BFO-2020 doesn't include the realized in
relation, but I couldn't think of an easy way to word smith the definition to use some cognate of has realization
.
@phismith This is your definition. Let me know if you want to change it as @wdduncan has suggested.
