Gutenberg: Editor content is full width on classic themes
Quick summary
Customer contacted us (36716345-hc) to note that the content in the block editor on their site is suddenly full width. (They weren't able to provide a specific timeline, but noted the change was from at least the past week. I suspect this may be much more recent and related to a Gutenberg update.)
The live site and previews aren't affected, but there is no padding/margin to either side of content in the editor anymore.
Steps to reproduce
- Activate a classic theme (i.e. non-block/FSE theme) on a simple site (e.g. Hever, Twenty Twenty).
- Open the block editor for a page or post.
What you expected to happen
The max or default content width in the editor should match what is expected for that theme.
Example from Meraki (FSE) theme:

What actually happened
The content spans the entire width of the editor, with no margins or padding.
Example from Hever theme:

The user also reported, "the pictures inserted are much larger than when I viewed them last time". Please see the ticket for the referenced post in question.
We have a handful of users reporting in this thread: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/suddenly-have-edge-to-edge-text-in-default-editor-unreadable-unusable/
I confirmed it's happening in Gema on my site.
This user is using Franklin. I'm finding out about the others.
At first, I wasn't able to replicate this on a .org site with the default, Twenty Twenty-Two theme active. But then I tested on a Simple site with this theme, and I couldn't replicate it. So it sounds like only some themes are affected.
Taking one of the examples above, I installed Independent Publisher 2 on a self-hosted site. And here are the results:
Independent Publisher 2 theme on self-hosted, Gutenberg plugin deactivated:

Same setup, with Gutenberg plugin activated.
So it seems like the affected themes can be replicated on a self-hosted site with Gutenberg 14.0.0.
Seems to be a core issue. I've created a GH issue on core Gutenberg here https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/43752

Happening here as well: 36173407-hc
Theme: Gazette
Recommended the user work with List View & Block settings open, as they had a hard time reading their content with it appearing so wide

The PR to fix this has been merged https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/pull/43755
This issue should be fixed very as soon as the patch is rolled into WP.com

@andrewserong or @fullofcaffeine Do you know if is this going to be rolled out this week on WP.com? it seems we're getting quite a lot of requests.
EDIT: I replied to my user here since it looks like Gutenberg 14.0.2 resolved it.
