Feature Request: Add Blueprint or Site template to build new website faster

Open faisalahammad opened this issue 1 year ago • 5 comments

What

When building a new website, it's great to have a blueprint or template option where I can set my preferred configuration, theme, and plugins.

Why

It'll help me build a new website faster without manually installing or configuring my desired setup one by one.

Thanks, @faisalahammad, for adding that. Could you share more about your use case?

  • How many templates would you usually have in your setup? What plugins or themes would you include?
  • Would you expect always to use the latest WordPress when you create a site from the template, or would you prefer to lock the template to a particular WordPress version?

You're welcome, @wojtekn.

  1. I'll need 3-4 blueprints/templates. Since I work at a Form plugin company, I'll need to include Ninja Forms, Gravity Forms, Fluent Forms, and all of their add-ons in a template so I can create a new site without installing them manually.
  2. It depends, and there are no strict rules to stick with an older version of WordPress or use the latest version. If necessary, I can always update the WordPress Core from the blueprint/template.

Adding a suggestion from @danielbachhuber

It would be nice if you could studio://blueprint.json someone into Studio with a Blueprint

Adding some context: The screenshot in the original issue description is from the Local app.

To build new sites faster, we could offer users the option of starting with a site from the Blueprints Gallery. The user could select an existing Blueprint from the Gallery, which could either create the site immediately or open the Blueprint in a text area, making it easy to customize the Blueprint.

We could also have a Blueprints folder within the Studio folder and show Blueprints from that folder on top of the list of available Blueprints. Users could manually add Blueprints to that folder, or save their existing site configurations to the folder.

Playground's Blueprint Gallery

As an example, Playground already offers something similar. Image

Just a quick follow-up here. Work is underway to support Playground blueprints from within Studio. 🎉

Great. In my opinion this is the most important missing feature of Studio. Any thoughts on when we can expect this? Weeks, months or year?

A few weeks!

We've added support for Blueprints in 1.6.0 🥳
