Playback: speed changes from 1.0 to 1.5
Grouping reports of users playing an episode at playback speed 1.0 and suddenly changing to 1.5
In all these cases, users are listening using a Bluetooth headset, and debug logs show Remote control: changePlaybackRateCommand

Just heard from the user in #5409248-zen. It turns out they were accidentally adjusting the playback speed on their Apple Watch, which was the cause of the problem for them.

I’m having a weird issue when periodically (around a couple times a month) the speed control switches to 1.5x even if it’s been on a table. The last time this happened it was just sitting on my nightstand playing through the phone speaker. I do have an Apple Watch but I wasn’t interacting with it when the playback speed changed.
This may be a related issue. I have a user that says the app is resetting their playback speed to 1x from their selected speed:
Hi, I’m a longtime and very regular user of PocketCasts, and over the last month or two I’ve noticed a problem: my podcasts seem to regularly forget their speed settings and revert to 1x. This appears to happen both when I change the global speed setting, and when I override and change the setting per podcast.
I haven’t been able to discern any pattern to when it forgets. It’s not all the time, and restarting the app doesn’t seem to cause it. But it happens very regularly, probably once a day or so.

@mdrockwell Are there also Remote control: changePlaybackRateCommand
messages in the logs when this happens?
@rviljoen I'm not seeing that in the logs in this most recent case. Let me reach out to the user to see if they are listening via Bluetooth or some other method.
@rviljoen The user has confirmed they are always listening via Bluetooth
5873913-zd-woothemes found steps to reliably reproduce.
- Start playing a podcast. Set the speed faster, say 1.5x (it doesn't seem to matter if it's the global setting or a per-podcast override).
- Pause the podcast.
- (This is the key) Use Siri to start the podcast again by saying "Hey Siri, play on PocketCasts"
- The podcast will resume playing, but at 1x speed.
Given that information I think their actual issue is known in #41
I'm learning a foreign language, and subscribe to a number of podcasts in that language. I only ever want to listen to them at speed 1.0. So I have them set "Custom for this podcast" to speed 1.0. But Apple Watch playback seems to ignore this setting, and if my previous (English) podcast was at 1.5, overrides the custom 1.0 and plays it too fast. This is frustrating as it happens consistently, and it is quite fiddly on the Watch to change the speed. Is it possible to have Apple Watch playback observe the custom speed set for a podcast?
Might be an issue with the Apple Watch not observing this change?

Reported in https://forums.pocketcasts.com/forums/topic/playback-effects-speed-jumps-to-x1-5-ios/
While listening to podcasts the playback speed randomly jumps to x1.5. I listen at x1 speed. Yet, usually after pausing and resuming the playback, for no good reason and unpredictably, the speed jumps up to, say, x1.5 speed. It doesn’t happen 100% of the time so it isn’t reproducible on-demand. All I can say that it seems associated with pausing and resuming playback and perhaps also while my phone is connected to some bluetooth or airplay device.
I don’t recall it happening while the episode is actually playing, only when there’s a pause and resumption. I see others outside of this forum have discussed this issue so I’m surprised that nobody has yet mentioned it on this forum.
/Edit - 2024-03-12: User confirmed they use Apple Watch. They also added:
The issue occurs when I might be connected to headphones. I have tried a few pairs – it happens on all of them, but it also happens when I’m connected to wired headphones (using a lightning–headphone adapter.)
Issue also happens while using AirPlay.
