Watch Play Source Not Syncing
Description
This was reported in 8829902-zd-a8c
I can no longer seem to sync data to my watch. I have an iPhone 12 Pro and Apple Watch series 6 cellular. I need latest podcasts to appear on my watch as I stream them when I go running.
Also, when you go to “Refresh Data” in the watch app, it is stuck on "Refreshing..."
Step-by-step reproduction instructions
I can reproduce this.
- Go to Play Source in the watch app.
- Check the Refresh Data status.
- Tap the Refresh Data button.
- Compare Now Playing and Up Next with your phone app.

If I were to select my watch as the play source, then there’s nothing in Now Playing, nothing in Up Next, no downloads. My phone is iOS version 17.6.1 (21G93) and my watchOS is version 10.6.1 (21U580).
I have the same problem after updating to the latest version. Already contacted support with logs a week ago, but they are silent so far. There is a thread on reddit about this also.

I can’t say for certain whether the crashing problem has been resolved because there’s no downloaded content on the watch (because I reinstalled the watch app) and because the refresh isn’t completing, I can’t select anything to download. But even just with the watch app on the screen where you choose between Phone and Watch (where the refresh status shows “refreshing…”), if I let the screen go dark, wait a few seconds, then raise my wrist again, sometimes my watch is back on the watch home screen and when I launch the PC app again, I see the little initial icon and circular spinner which makes me think the app crashed and re-launched.
The user above from 8873698-zen reported back:
I updated my iPhone to iOS18 and watchOS to v11 as well. Refreshing appears to be occurring now based on limited testing.

I have the same issue: Watch Os: 10.6.1 (Cannot upgrade, Series 5 watch) iOS: 18.0.1
Resetted my watch completely. App crashes and syncs occasionally only.
Same issue here.

The bug seems to be confined to those stuck on watchOS 10.

The user previously had an older Apple Watch, which was incompatible with watchOS 11. They have since upgraded to an iPhone 16 running iOS 18.0.1 and an Apple Watch Series 10 with watchOS 11.0.1. However, they are experiencing issues with the watch app, which is now non-functional. The app is not recognizing their Plus subscription, leaving all Plus features unavailable on their Apple Watch.

Doesn’t refresh and doesn’t download anything to play offline …
Another app update (7.75.04) arrives that did not fix the apple watch issues. Given that this affects subscribers only, and those affected essentially pay for a now broken service, i wonder whether this bug gets the attention it deserves.

@Loopback666 The team merged a bug fix this morning via https://github.com/Automattic/pocket-casts-ios/pull/2338, so I assume it will be released in the next TestFlight Beta for testing. Are you on TestFlight? Would be good if you can validate that the fix resolves the issues you are seeing.
@rviljoen I am not on a TestFlight version yet. Please send me an invite code, I am happy to test the next beta then.
@Loopback666 I'm not a member of the team, but I think @SergioEstevao can help. cc: @pocketcasts
@Loopback666 can you share an email so I can invite you to the beta testing TestFlight group
@Loopback666 to avoid publishing your email, you can contact the support trough the app and let them know you want to join the TestFlight group
Thanks guys, I'll ask support and report back the test results.
I've installed the TestFlight beta (7.76) on both the phone (IOS 18.0.1) and the watch (AW 5 running WatchOS 10.6.1).
Unfortunately, the sync issue persists. After opening the watch app, it remains in "Refreshing..." forever. Eventually, it recognizes the episode queue and Now Playing information from the Phone, but the Watch section remains empty.
Also, the watch app continues to crash (opening the app, tapping on UI elements). It is erratic, sometimes the app crashes, then it stays alive for the same UI interaction.
Edit: it took a while, now the Watch section is also initially synced. Its still unreliable (or very slow?), after the first sync it is again stuck in "Refreshing..." state (something that completed in a couple of seconds).
Sync still broken in 7.76.02, but app crashes less frequently.
@Loopback666 are you able to send us the crash logs of your device? so we can investigate the issue further?
I just sent a log collection from the in-app support option. Let me know if you prefer a different way of sharing (in here, your beta slack etc.)
