When installing hyperdb prior to running Wordpress (cold install); wordpress throws errros

Goal is to have hyperdb installed and configured for 1 master and several worker MySQL instances. db.php has been installed db-config.php has been configured (correctly)

but when going to the famous first-time-startpage no page is shown. Logs show that the wp-options table is missing.

How can we make this possible?
