Rest of the translation string

Open maboroshin opened this issue 2 years ago • 22 comments

Not yet added to the translation file. Possibly not all.

  • "Latitude"
  • "Longitude"
  • "Beta"
  • "Stable"
  • "Service not running yet, please wait..."
  • "Restart App"

Hello!

Localization for the tray is another story in itself since the service is a different run time and needs localization built from the ground up.

Could you split the issue into two? One for the app, one for the service.

I will add the mentioned missing translation strings for the app today.

As for the beta and stable strings. Initially these were omitted on purpose because these are fixed branch names that correspond to our build channels. Adding translate strings for those two words is possible, however we do ask to keep the original string intact (for example:

  • Beta (translated name)
  • translated name (Beta)

Spiritreader avatar Oct 07 '21 09:10 Spiritreader

I wouldn't make beta translatable, because in every language everyone knows what a beta beta is.

But maybe for not latin languages people need a conversion in different typings.

same goes for lat and lon.

Armin2208 avatar Oct 07 '21 09:10 Armin2208

I've simply made a list. "Beta" will understand as beta, in Japanese. It's no problem, if it's not translatable.

"Latitude" is not a common word in Japanese. In general, it's "緯度". But there's a link from the app to a English latitude search site. I might translate it like this: 緯度 (Latitude)

I've added the requested translation strings. Note: The "Restart App" translation string you requested is already being taken care of. It is set programmatically here, so you don't need to do anything for this, as it should already be translated! https://github.com/AutoDarkMode/Windows-Auto-Night-Mode/blob/27173cc4f31d2835f2b651ae81455dd422c6cc83/AutoDarkModeApp/Pages/PageSettings.xaml.cs#L133

I was unable to locate the missing "Theme" translation strings, but updated the other ones

I was unable to locate the missing "Theme" translation strings

It's here. AutoDarkModeApp/Pages/PageThemePicker.xaml : Text="Theme"

  • [x] Off

  • [x] Follow us
  • Version is not translated, because we refer to this page section when requesting debug information
  • Language is not translated, because people need to be able to change if
    • their system locale is wrong for some reason
    • they changed it by accident and don't know where to find the setting out of memory alone

Ok. In the Turkish translation, I used to translate it as "Dil (Language)". I'm fixing this.

Latitude Longitude

It is not used in this way in Turkish. I guess it's the same for most languages.

or

If it will remain in English, a similar translation can be made for each language. "Enlem (Latitude)" "Boylam (Longitude)"

I've seen other apps solve this with keeping the english name of the language in brackets. e.g. Español (Spanish) or Russian / русский instead keeping the english or native terms only. It allows people to find their preferred setting more quickly.

I think this is the correct way to go forward for these kind of strings.

Spiritreader avatar Oct 08 '21 16:10 Spiritreader

I doubt that "Latitude/Longitude" is a international term that is used and spelled exactly the same in every language. Even more so when thinking about languages which use their own character set like Russian or Chinese.

Since you might be familiar with German @Spiritreader: In German, it would be "Breitengrad/Längengrad". People probably understand the English term there... but try to find them in the "Duden". ;)

tooomm avatar Oct 08 '21 17:10 tooomm

@tooomm My original intent was only to keep strings in english that are used for debugging/troubleshooting such as

  • Version
  • Beta/Stable (update channels)

The language string is more of a personal request, as I have more than once changed the language in a software and then had trouble finding the setting again (mostly out of curiosity).

For the discussion about any other strings, such as Latitude/Longitude, please take it up with @Armin2208. I don't really care how things are translated and am mostly following policy.

I do believe that using parentheses for any instances where dual translation should be used, makes sense.

I can absolutely relate here. Have been there as well. :) That's why I like it a lot when apps utilize icons - as you do - to label certain areas/features in an app (e.g. the cog wheel to find "Settings" easier and independently from the selected language).

Sure, let's see what Armin things about the translation strings. 👍

It's important that the Language Header isn't translatable. So people can always find a way to change it. Version is just a title so we could make it translatable

Language is not translated, because people need to be able to change if

That's a great idea! I will implement this.

Sure, let's see what Armin things about the translation strings. 👍

Maybe we should change we comment. If you say the people in your country will really not understand longitude and latitude, you can translate it. In German it's perfectly fine to use the english terms and it makes more sense for everyone. But I understand now it depends on the language.

Could you add the other lines about "Autostart"?

@Armin2208 your screenshot looks nice!

Notes:

  • Spanish in spanish is spelled with a special n --> "Español"
  • Czesh should be something like "Česky"

I created a PR for it: https://github.com/AutoDarkMode/Windows-Auto-Night-Mode/pull/311

tooomm avatar Oct 13 '21 10:10 tooomm

Translation strings for the updater are now available! (along with most of the newly added strings in 10.3)
