Can't install in Windows11

Open Dec-35 opened this issue 3 years ago • 8 comments

Description Can't install the program, apparently it can't acess its files. Even changing the installation path to another drive does not solve the issue. This happens with the microsoft store and the github versions.

How to make the issue happen Double click the install.exe -> Choose language -> choose installation path -> get an error saying it can't access said path

Expected behaviour I wanted it to install

Do you have administrator rights on your system?

Do you have administrator rights on your system?

I'm the only user of my laptop and am the admin. I tried running the stup.exe with admin rights but still the same issue. I can access the folder though...

Okay interesting. What seems to be happening is that InnoSetup can't place the uninstaller correctly. It is supposed to place it in the install directory, but for some reason it can't do that.

~~I wonder if this is due to a Windows policy or uninstaller information configuration issue. I'm sadly not very knowledgeable when it comes to the installer, @Armin2208 will have to investigate this.~~

In the meantime, if you still want to use Auto Dark Mode, you can download the .zip file on the release page (AutoDarkModeX_10.0.0.26.zip) and extract it anywhere (but NOT into C:\Program Files). The app can run fully portable and is self-contained.

What is the exact install path you were using?

Update:

I have figured out what is going on. It is very likely that you were trying to install AutoDarkMode into C:\Program Files You can't change the installer location to a protected location currently, as the dialog to run the setup as true admin (right clicking and selecting run as admin does nothing) has been temporarily removed. If you don't try to modify the installation path it will work.

Note: If you decide to install Auto Dark Mode into the Windows Program files folder in the future (when we have restored this functionality), you will not be able to use the updater to get new versions.

I've already tried to install autodarkmode on another drive and another path which requires no particular authorization but it still can't. The error message is a pop up box saying it couldn't create the "autodarkmode.exe" and if I skip this it doesn't open the app and If I close it it stops the install. Is this related to the path issue?

Have you tried installing it without modifying the default path?

Spiritreader avatar Oct 06 '21 08:10 Spiritreader

Using default installation setting worked for me

Well it doesn't for me... Leaving everything to default leads in the app failing to install

The most recent stable version allows you to select "all users" mode again, which installs Auto Dark Mode in privileged mode.

However, note that using Auto Dark Mode this way currently does not allow automatic updates (and as a result, no beta builds. Were investigating updating these kind of installations, but don't know the feasibility of it yet, as well as when we make that available.

Since we can't really control what inno setup is doing and we couldn't find anything wrong with our install script, I would recommend you either use privileged Mode, or portable (download and extract the zip to a non protected location.

Installer has been reworked multiple times since then.

Please reopen if still an issue.
