On the attached document the title is in a character font that the appliction describes as a star, problem that star masks the beginning of the score is makes it impossible to interpret

Impressive! There may exist a real solution for your case (we can suspect a font-related problem). I assigned this issue to @maximumspatium who is the most competent guy for PDF input.

For now, here is just a workaround that worked for me:

  1. Open the .pdf file in Foxit Reader
  2. Ask Foxit Reader to print the page
  3. Instead of a "real" printer, select "Foxit Reader PDF Printer" as the target, leading to a new PDF file
  4. Load the new PDF file into Audiveris.

Et voilà:
