Per-feed item click action (go straight to item source) + more text on flow page (un-truncate option)

1. Environment

  • Device: [OnePlus Nord]
  • OS: [Android 13]
  • APP: [0.11.1]

2. Describe the feature request

A lot of news feeds (most?) only contain the title of each item, along with a short teaser (I'm sure there's a better word for these, but it escapes me at the moment. EDIT: Looked it up, think the term might be Deck or Drop Head).

As an example, BBC News items have a title and a teaser.

On the Flow page, both titles and teasers are truncated when they're longer than two lines.

When I find a news item I think might be interesting, I click it, and get access to the full title (if truncated in Flow) and the full teaser (if truncated in Flow). If neither is truncated, I get the exact same information that I had in Flow.

My feature request:

  1. The ability to skip the item page for all items in a given feed, and go straight to the article at the source.
  • This could be a simple toggle/button on the "Feed Settings" modal that appears when you long-press a given Feed in Feed View, e.g. "Preset > Skip Item Page", "Presets > Straight To Source", or similar.

  • This would save people an unnecessary click in feeds that always require visiting the source to read the full article/post/etc.

  1. Allow full (un-truncated) title and teaser in Flow View.
  • Using my BBC example from above, here is a news item from today, as seen in my Flow page. The text in brackets is truncated in Flow, visible in "item view":

Slovakia backs plan to shoot 350 bears after man killed i... (n attack) Around a quarter of the country's brown bears will be culled after a ma... (n was attacked in a forest.)

  • I'm not gaining a lot of information in "item view". If I could enable "Presets > Do Not Truncate" for this feed — as I know that it's of the "title + short teaser" variety — in combination with "Presets > Skip Item Page", I'd have a Flow page for BBC News that gave me all the available information up front, and if I wanted to read a given news item, clicking it would take me straight to the article.

  • Some people might get enough information from the truncated title + teaser in Flow (retaining the neatness of the truncated title + teaser), and still prefer skipping the "item page" when clicking an item in Flow, going straight to the source article.

I understand that truncating titles/text in Flow is an aesthetic choice, lending itself to ReadYou's clean and uncluttered interface.

As default-off options, my two proposals would sacrifice a tiny bit of the Flow neatness if enabled, but, personally, I'd gain so much more than I lost. And it would be a sacrifice by choice, not changing the apps default appearance in any way if not enabled.

Hope this makes sense, and please comment if you'd like me to clarify anything 😊

Presets > Straight To Source

"Open in browser" is in 0.12.x now

Preference for longer article summaries should land in 0.13, thx for the suggestions 🤞

Works perfectly, thank you! Looking forward to 0.13! 😃🤘
