Restore from Android backup

Open kxzaon opened this issue 8 months ago • 1 comments

Hi, I don’t find any details in the wiki or manpage and I don’t find any related existing issue.

I would like to “restore” a backup that was done on an android phone, onto signal-cli. The goal here is to keep secure (easy backups), the primary device managed by signal-cli and have several linked devices as Desktop or iPad synchronised to it.

But I can’t start over with a new registered account, I need to keep my many years old history for this new primary signal-cli account. For that I can only hope that signal-cli is supporting the restore of a android backup file. Is this something that have been already considered?

As a workaround, I’m thinking about an old android phone that acts as primary device for linked devices. Which is less sexy.

Thank you. Regards,

signal cli does not support transfer or restore yet you could export your messages to html and use signal cli as you described, as primary device https://github.com/bepaald/signalbackup-tools?tab=readme-ov-file#linux_packages good luck im actually writing a signal client to do what you describe here but nothing ready yet

Indeed restoring from Android backups is not supported yet, and might never be supported. signal-cli also doesn't store a message history so restoring the backup is not that useful.
