Personal Event Calendar
Describe the solution you'd like
I know Ithir is a branch off Arxcode, which is why I'm posting this here (because it'd benefit me THERE). I can never keep track of the events I'd like to attend. Here is a current example of the calendar on Ithir right now:
I'm not going to all of those tournament events. To remember which ones I want to go to, I'd have to view each and every one. Sure, that's partly on the organizer for using such long names that they get truncated, but almost every event system on MUs for the past couple decades has allowed you to 'sign up' for events. Arx (and thus Ithir) do announce, game-wide, when an event is starting, but that requires you be logged on when that happens.
What if I'm not logged on at all times? What if I guess the wrong day? What if I want the event on the 26th, but I forget and think it's on the 27th?
Describe alternatives you've considered The two solutions (and personally I'd love a combination of the two) that I've considered are:
- Provide a way to /signup to an event. The bonus to this is that you could feed the /signups to the organizer. For things like tournaments, it would negate that constant need for organizers to keep telling people 'PLEASE MAIL ME IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE.' All they'd have to do is check their own event and see 'Oh, Joe, Bob, Susan, Jenny, and Amanda are participating, awesome.' Whereas Joe, Bob, Susan, Jenny, and Amanda could check @cal and see they have (I see it as a list where the top half shows your signed up events and the bottom half shows the ones you haven't signed up for) an event on the 26th.
- Give a link to a .ics for the game that people can download, then load into their personal calendar. This would be AMAZING for people with a busy RL. I don't know what the backend work on this is like, but I would really love to not have to sit every week and add 'Login to the game and check each and every @cal event to see if it's one I want to attend to add to my planner' to my Sunday evening.
The first of the two is probably the best option (since it's most akin to what people are used to), but I'd love to see a mix of the two. As it stands right now, I miss probably 75% of the events I'd otherwise like to attend because it's pretty much just 'hope I'm logged in an hour before the event so I see the announcement.'
