Campaigns - Player Notes (Enhancement)

Open tjclayton opened this issue 8 years ago • 14 comments

I wasn't sure if it made sense to open this against the existing Campaigns or create a new item.

This probably isn't possible with the current setup, but it would be useful to be able to add player notes to entries automatically assigned to you character. There are things which may be useful to track that do not apply to all characters.

This is a good place for this issue.

Do you mean notes editable by the player or notes from the DM for a specific player about a particular session/log entry?

I was thinking more for the player to add to track for their own log. Not a mechanism for DM's to add stuff for specific players (although I suppose that is useful as well). If I buy something during an adventure then I like to put it in my log so that I can show how I account for why my character has certain items.

There are things that are player specific that I (as the player) want to track. Another example is perhaps the party earned a specific amount of gold, but during the adventure I bought items. I would like to be able to account for that in my log. However, I'm locked out of editing things. I can track that on my character sheet, but now my total is out of whack with the total of gold in the site.

How about having the ability to create a new entry from an existing campaign entry that will autofill date / module name / session number?

I think that approach could work.

Is the intent to provide a mechanism for the DM to add entries that he or she knows are controlled to minimize differences/cheating/etc by locking the entries? Is the intent to give the DM an easy way for players to add entries to their log?

If it is the former, then I think it's a matter of determining which fields should be only DM controlled and opening up the rest. If it is the latter then perhaps it is more just a way to copy the campaign log into the player's log and it becomes a normal entry. If it is something in the middle (like still maintaining the link) then it probably becomes more complicated.

As an example, if I leave a campaign I have no way to remove those entries from my character's log. Regardless of the approach, I don't think a player should lose the ability to control what entries appear on the character log.

I'm not sure if that helps, but I am nervous about providing more than an opinion and letting my personal approach impact others usage of this functionality.

So, the biggest problem with allowing players to edit their own entries is that syncing them all up again becomes untenable if the dm wants to make some additional changes.

It would actually be pretty easy to allow players to break the link between an entry and their character.

I basically need to add additional notes, adjust gold for what I spent during the session, remove inspiration since my characters are often not in a faction, etc. I don't personally want to create separate log entries to modify/supplement the information from the campaign entry. I don't have any ideas for an easy solution aside from having player "modifier" entries for everything which seems to be more trouble than its worth. All I can say is I wasn't able to use this feature (removed my character from the campaign) without being able to control my own entry, be able to remove things I don't want in my log, etc.

I have had DM's scrutinize every aspect of my log, including even when potions are used, etc. Without control of the log entry, I can't really use it.

Like I said on the other post, this is probably just me.

ToA allows for per-player extra xp rewards for exceptional RP. Using campaign log entries, those rewards would require another player-made 'modifier' entry.

One idea might be: If the player 'breaks' the link, continue to show a (greyed out?) copy of the latest (master) Campaign entry below it ... for reference ...

To me, this is the main problem with the Campaigns tool. Exp might differ from player to player, as might gold spendings, renown or secret missions.

I believe 736Dave's idea might work.

Also, even if the link breaking would still be a problem, if there was the possibility for the DM to edit logs from their player's character log, at least we could come back and correct once more if we did any changes on the main campaign log.

This puts more work on DMs but in my particular case, I'd do it just to not bother my players with this sort of stuff.

"How about having the ability to create a new entry from an existing campaign entry that will autofill date / module name / session number?" <<<------ Or this!

Why not just make an individual entry for them then?

In AL, I have not had it come up where one player would get more XP that someone else. As for gold spendings, those I have the player keep track of in there own time. I will go out of my way to help my players, but i won't do everything for them.

SANSd20 avatar Jul 17 '18 19:07 SANSd20

SANSd20, I have come up with that scenario plenty of times (a lot in S7 modules): renown differs according to faction. a failed save ends up making a player earn 25 xp less than the others, players leaving early/arriving late, dino races bets winnings, in game purchases (different inn rates).

Ariel. I guess I'm too obsessive in the way I handle stuff and archive my information -I can't seem to have more logs than I feel I should. For me, this tool gives you the possibility to quickly, and in a streamlined manner, manage rewards for your campaign (especially with players that are new to AL) but it seems like it works in this specific way, only in particular scenarios. I guess I could get my head around having two or three logs per session or just have my players fill theirs.

Anyway, the site is amazing, a great tool for all of us AL players.

Athalaxx, fair enuff. I did not consider the modules.
