I was trying to upload a video of 30mb that was 48 seconds long, but the video would just keep loading and loading on Tumblr that I couldn’t save the post as even a draft. I tried modifying the video file, but still nothing. I thought it was my internet connection, my adblocker, my privacy/security extensions, and whatnot, but it turned out to be XKit. Because right after I disabled it, the video was finally uploaded in about 30seconds.

Would you mind sharing your XKit config to help diagnose this?

XKit Rewritten → Backup → Export → Download

You can upload the resulting file in a comment here.

Please be aware that if you have ever used Quick Tags or Tag Tracking+, your tag bundles and/or tracked tags will be included in this data. Do not share it you feel uncomfortable with this.

I'm not able to reproduce the issue with this config and a 50.7MB MP4 video.

The Tumblr post editor hanging when uploading a video (I believe to an existing draft?) is actually normal, because the video has to be not just uploaded but also processed by Tumblr's media resizer before it can be published. You won't run into this if the video is the first thing you put in the post... but ever since the introduction of draft auto-saving, locking the editor for processing is something that Tumblr just does—although it should tell you that it's doing that, with a blue notification at the bottom of the screen.

I'll keep this issue open in case I'm wrong about this, but right now I'm inclined to believe that this is just Tumblr video processing weirdness.

Maybe you could upload the original video file for me to test too? If I can successfully upload the same video with the same XKit config active, that could at least rule out XKit as a factor.

I’ve deleted the file from my laptop, so I can’t share it :((( As for the editor hanging when uploading a video, I am actually aware of that, but I don’t think that was the issue here. What I usually do when uploading videos is to always create the post as a Draft first, so that even if I don’t get to click Save as Draft later because of the editor being locked, it will still show up in my Drafts page with the video processed. That wasn’t what happened here

Despite 30-40 mins of the editor locked for processing, the video was still not processed and added to my drafts. But the moment I turned off XKit, the video was added successfully.

But since you weren’t able to reproduce the problem on your end, I’m thinking that maybe XKit is just conflicting with some other browser extension I have. Either way, I’ll just leave it at that. It’s not too much trouble anyway to just deactivate the extension for a while when I need to upload a video
