Resuming Slide Show

Open ucphinni opened this issue 5 years ago • 15 comments

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. After a slideshow has been added to OnlyM, advancing a slide then stopping the slide show and starting the slide show again starts from the first slide.

Describe the solution you'd like When OnlyM is started, all slide shows loaded should be set to the first slide. For any given OnlyM process session, for each slideshow, OnlyM should remember the current slide across slideshow starts and stops. The previous and next buttons should be grayed out for beginning and end of the slide show respectively regardless of display state and the slide shows thumbnail should always reflect the current slide.

Describe alternatives you've considered Dragging and dropping the slide show pictures to OnlyM and manually showing the pictures in sequence can be done, but this defeats the entire purpose of having the slide show feature in first place.

As part of a day 2 feature, there could be a configuration setting keeping the slide position and loading them across OnlyM sessions. If this added feature is implemented, a new "go to first slide" button would be needed to set the position to slide 1 to each slide show.

Couldn't you simply create a slide show for each day/session?

@ucphinni Thanks. Here's a typical use-case in support of the feature request:

  1. Operator starts the slideshow, displaying the first image.
  2. After a few minutes the operator must close the slideshow so as to revert to a blank screen.
  3. Some minutes later the operator needs to continue the slideshow from the second slide.

The above use-case could be accommodated by adding blank images at appropriate points in the slideshow but is admittedly a hack. And it would not work if at item 2 above, the operator must play a video between first and second slides (instead of simply showing a blank screen).

Feature request supports Bethel talks and more recently co visits. Our worst case scenario was a Bethel speaker during his service talk that had 22 images, about 8 referred to again later in the talk seemingly out of sequence although the transcript doc ahead of time warned us. His transcript document indicated for us to go back to yeartext on his verbal cue. He also had a video in the middle.  We simply used all images in OnlyM and had a lot of jumping around. Made sure we deleted all the images at the end. It's doable, but a couple of mistakes were made. These type of out of band scenarios are becoming more common. Not sure how other kingdom halls are fairing. null

In VLC , what we do for this is stick the image in the playlist a second time, per the outline, that way everything is in order. Also, in the past, we have used a black slide to stick in the playlist to simulate a black screen. Another trick is to windows+ "print screen", with JW Library on, crop the portion with the year text, and save it as a jpeg, and insert the year text in as a slide. All these can be done with VLC, Power point, Google slides, and onlyM if you want to mess with file naming.

@ucphinni , similar to what has been suggested by @blazer2004 , create a separate slideshow for each contiguous group of slides and intersperse them with videos. Where a slide is used multiple times include that image multiple times in correct sequence. This should allow you to do exactly what you are asking for unless I'm missing something. When not showing anything from OnlyM JW Library will be showing the Year Text.

Name files similar to this: 001 Slideshow part 1 002 Video no 1 003 Slideshow part 2 004 Video no 2 etc...

Never thought of that. Was hoping it was in the OnlyM culture.

Explicitly disallowed PowerPoint and Vlc because they became maintenance and training points so i would prefer not to open that workflow. Having to support 4 going on 5 (in feb) congregations in our kingdom hall. Most of time one gets calls about how to do something or problems 5 minutes before or during a problem normally when a funeral, wedding , Bethel service talk, or co visit which you don't know was going to happen. Time pressure is real when you are trying to assess current state and what the person is trying to do over the phone. Knowing there is only one way to do something is a big plus for support.

By request, will be training the sound brothers sometime in February especially with the addition of the extra congregation. Many of brothers are not technical so that is a also limiting factor.

Would be nice if I had a complete solution by then.

Ok. The print screen idea of the year text works. I will be adding the image file to the kingdom hall computer desktop. This will help with adding the yeartext inbetween each slide when desired.

In the case of a video in the middle, there would be 2 slideshows: one before and one after.

Might be tedious but is explainable to a non technical person using OnlyM, and follows 1 way of doing things principle.

Thank you all for your help.

ucphinni avatar Jan 28 '19 12:01 ucphinni

@ucphinni , Glad I could help. The issue with adding the Year Text to the desktop is that you have to do it every year at midnight on 31st December. If you display it using JW Library it is always right!

@ucphinni ^ Indeed, there will be times you will not want the Year Text on the desktop. A couple points to consider also is 1) VLC is the currenlty suggested program in some setup documentation for KH PC's. Having a working copy on the PC and being trained in its use is a really good idea. 2) If your KH gets used for training in the future, good shot the trainer may want to use powerpoint or maybe even google slides. Of course, they also have been known to bring there own PC and hook up the PC's HDMI cable. Being ready to go in multiple work flows on a moments notice is never a bad idea.

@AntonyCorbett What about allowing the user to click the previous/next buttons before pressing play? This way it'd be possible to choose a starting point. This and/or remembering the last played slide in the current session.

TizianoNoto avatar Jan 28 '19 17:01 TizianoNoto

@blazer2004 Edited my previous response. Needed to be more explicit. The yeartext on desktop is a image file to be added to the slide show. VLC has caused some problems even after training. HDMI connection is supported and you may use a computer that has Powerpoint or VLC or any other software on it. It is implied by a computer via HDMI, you are more advanced.

@TizianoNoto questions sum up this feature request.

ucphinni avatar Jan 28 '19 19:01 ucphinni

Depending on the display devices you may get better quality by saving the year text as PNG.

@ucphinni Glad I got straight to the point, just wanted to see the issue from a technical point of view.

TizianoNoto avatar Jan 28 '19 20:01 TizianoNoto

^ True... I think I normally default to jpeg for it's universal compatibility, that's just me. I've seen A/V teams at assembly halls use google slides to frame pictures on a solid color back drop so that they look ok on a large projector, and then save the slide as an image. I thought it was a great idea.

blazer2004 avatar Jan 28 '19 20:01 blazer2004

My proposed design is as follows:

  1. Navigation buttons are enabled even when the slideshow is inactive (thanks @TizianoNoto). This allows you to select the starting slide before you click the Play button. This is consistent with the behaviour of video and audio files where the slider can be used to select a starting offset.

  2. Add a flag in the slideshow file itself to indicate whether the slideshow should reset on close. If the flag is set (default) then when you close a slideshow its position resets to the first slide. If the flag is cleared then closing the slideshow will advance the slide position (i.e. move to the next slide) before hiding and it will pick up from this position when next played. The flag can be edited using the Slideshow editor.

  3. Regarding the thumbnail (mentioned by @ucphinni - the OP) I don't propose to modify the thumbnail to show the current slide (at least not as part of this issue). If you think this is important then please raise another issue for it.

The above will cater for the requirement and keep the UI uncluttered.
